Let us come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:16 NKJV
Obtaining Mercy …
Who doesn’t need God’s mercy, right? His kindness and good will toward us?
Can I share with you what I’ve learned about mercy in this verse?
The Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance tells us the phrase we may obtain comes from the Greek word lambano (G2983) and it means to take.
Some descriptions of obtain, according to The Outline of Biblical Usage from The Blue Letter Bible, are to take with the hand, to lay hold of any person or thing in order to use it and to take what is one’s own.
To obtain something, you simply take it knowing it belongs to you …
- This is what God says about mercy: it is ours to take. Not in a pushy, entitlement kind of way. But in a very confident, gratitude filled way. What cost God so much, He offers for us to freely take.
What if you got into the car to go somewhere, and realized you forgot your purse, you would just run back into the house and grab it, right? Or perhaps you have your favorite drink in the refrigerator at work. Would you ask for it or just go and get it?
You wouldn’t ask your daughter if you could wear your own sweater, you’d go into the closet and grab it, unless of course she’s always taking it. (Ha, ha.)
Learning about ‘obtaining’ mercy has made this verse much more personal to me. I have needed God’s mercy so many times in my life and will need it many more. I’m excited to discover what else God has already given me that I’m not aware of quite yet.
If you need mercy today, take it! God has already given it through His precious son, Jesus Christ. God bless you and have a wonderful day!
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever. Psalm 23:6 ESV
