“Delight yourself in the LORD, and He will give you the desires of your heart.” Psalm 37:4 ESV

Delight Yourself in the LORD …

Delight yourself in the LORD | Psalm 37:4Hello friends!🌻

I remember when I was a newbie Christian and a sweet lady from the church invited me and some of my friends to her beautiful home for an overnight scrapbooking party.

Sitting around her dining room table, we enjoyed some good homecooking and sweet fellowship when a close friend of the hostess pointed out the beautiful new chandelier hanging over her table.

The hostess, smiling from ear to ear, explained that God had given her this desire of her heart (the new chandelier) as a reward because she recently delighted in Him. I remember several of us, myself included, thinking that was pretty cool. All we need to do is delight in Jesus and He will answer our prayers and bless us with something other than Himself.

But through the years, I’ve learned that God doesn’t quite work like this. When we truly delight in Him, the LORD Himself becomes the one desire of our hearts and He promises to meet this desire by filling us with even more of Himself.

GOD desires for us to delight whole-heartedly in Him first and foremost and let all our other desires take the back burner. The more we delight in the LORD, the more our hunger for Him will grow. But unlike our earthly desires that can grow to unhealthy levels and potentially leave a hole in our hearts when they go unfulfilled, our desire for the LORD will always be satisfied beyond what we can ever imagine.

As this beautiful verse points out, the LORD will satisfy that craving within us FOR Him and give us all that we want OF Him. It is truly up to us how much of God we have in our lives.

Delight yourself in the LORD | Psalm 37:4One of the joys I have had as a mom through the years is watching both my Daughter’s eyes light up every time their Dad walks in the room.

Rick is such a good father and the girls know how much he loves and adores both of them. They enjoy his presence, they love talking to him and they laugh at all his jokes. My hubby enjoys their presence, too. And believe me, he will ham it up because he delights to hear them laugh.

How much more does our Heavenly Father delight in drawing close to us when He feels our delight and desire for Him?

I read some commentaries on this verse and came across this one from ‘the pulpit commentary’ on Bible Hub this morning:

  • Verse 4. – Delight thyself also in the Lord. Draw from communion with God all that inward intensity of joy which it is capable of giving.

My guiding word for 2024 is JOY and I know I didn’t stumble upon this commentary by accident this morning. I love how God had this be my very first post this year, already guiding me towards cultivating this joy in Him. I am looking forward to all He has for me.

God also had me come across this beautiful promise today …

These are King David’s words: “The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in Him; though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with his hand”Psalm 37:23-24 NIV.

I hope this post encourages your heart today. I will close with this:

Through the years, the LORD has met every one of my needs and has never been late with His provision. But a couple of times, He has surprised me by answering a prayer for something I wanted but didn’t particularly need. He didn’t do this until after much time had passed and I actually forgot that I even asked Him for it.

Has this ever happened to you?

Those moments stop me in my tracks and I just look up at Jesus in wonder. The only thing I can figure is He wanted me to have that thing I asked for, too, but in His wisdom, He needed to wait until that thing no longer had a hold on me.

Be blessed today my friend! Delight in the Lord and let Him fill you to overflowing with Himself. And just like God told Abraham in Genesis 15:1, He Himself is truly our exceedingly great reward!

Hugs and Prayers …
