Our Identity in Christ
Reading Time: 6 minutes

I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ Who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, Who loved me and gave Himself for me. Gal 2:20

Our Identity in Christ

One of the richest Scripture Passages pointing to our Identity in Christ can be found in Ephesians Chapter One. Our Heavenly Father created us exclusively and He is the ONLY One Who can truly define who we are.

After receiving God’s gracious gift of salvation through His Son, one of the most important truths any Christian must settle in their heart is who they are in Christ.

When we know and live in the truth that our new identity rests in Who Jesus is, we will feel more secure in God’s love and better prepared to stand up to the lies of the enemy. If we don’t understand who we have become, we will be an easy target for the false accusations of the enemy. We will exhaust ourselves striving to attain something we already possess in Christ.

Ephesians 1 – Our Identity in Christ

So today, let’s take some time to dig into Ephesians chapter one and drink in all that we are and do possess through our relationship with our beautiful Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Additional Bible Verses are provided to help you go even deeper …

Ephesians 1:3

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with EVERY spiritual blessing in Christ.

  • More Truth to soak in: God holds nothing back from us. (Rom 8:32) He blesses us with (His) power, love and a sound mind. (2 Tim 1:7) His Spirit rests on us and gives us wisdom, understanding, counsel, knowledge and a healthy fear of the Lord. (Isa 11:2) He blesses us with His Peace so our hearts don’t need to be troubled.  (John 14:27) He has set eternity in our hearts and makes everything beautiful in its time. (Eccl 3:11)

Ephesians 1:4

For He chose us in Him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight.

  • More Truth to soak in: We are His chosen people, a royal priesthood, God’s special possession, so we can declare the praises of Him Who called us out of darkness and into his wonderful light. (1 Pet 2:9) We are a holy people, who belong to the LORD our God. Of all the people on earth, the LORD our God has chosen us to be His own special treasure. (Deut 7:6) God gave Himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for Himself a people that are His very own, eager to do what is good. (Titus 2:14)

Ephesians 1:5-6

In love He predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with His pleasure and will — to the praise of His glorious grace, which He has freely given us in the One He loves.

  • More Truth to soak in: God is our Father and we are His sons and daughters. (2 Cor 6:18) Since we received and believed in Him, God gave us the right to become the children of God. (John 1:12) We who are led by His Spirit are the children of God. The Spirit we received does not make us slaves so we live in fear again, rather His Spirit brought about our adoption as the sons and daughters of God. And by Him, we cry Abba Father! The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are His children. We are the heirs of God and the co-heirs of Christ, if indeed we share in His sufferings in order that we may also share in His glory. (Rom 8:14-17)

Ephesians 1:7-8

In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace that He lavished on us.

  • More Truth to soak in: It was God’s will to give of Himself to rescue us from the present evil age. (Gal 1:4) There is no condemnation for us now that we are in Christ Jesus. (Rom 8:1) We have been crucified with Christ and we no longer live, but Christ lives in us. The life we now live in the body, we live by faith in the Son of God, who loved us and gave Himself for us. (Gal 2:20) God has swept away our offenses like a cloud, our sins like the morning mist. We must return to Him, for He has redeemed us. (Isa 44:22) We are redeemed with the precious blood of Christ, a Lamb without blemish or defect. (1 Pet 1:19) God will have compassion on us; He will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our inequities into the depths of the sea. (Micah 7:19)

Our Identity in ChristEphesians 1:9-10

With all wisdom and understanding, He made known to us the mystery of His will according to his good pleasure, which He purposed in Christ, to be put into effect when the times reach their fulfillment—to bring unity to all things in heaven and on earth under Christ.

  • More Truth to soak in: We can overcome being conformed to this world and be transformed by the renewing of our minds, so we may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. (Rom 12:2) God has appointed us to know His will and to see the Righteous One and to hear Him speak. (Acts 22:14) God wills to make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. (Col 1:27) God knows the good plans He has for us, plans to prosper us and not harm us, plans to give us hope and a future. (Jer 29:11) He equips us with everything good for doing his will … (Heb 13:21)

Ephesians 1:11-12

In Him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of Him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will in order that we, who were the first to put our hope in Christ, might be for the praise of His glory.

  • More Truth to soak in: God knew us and set us apart even before He formed us in our mother’s womb. He appointed us as prophets to the nations. (Jer 1:5) We are His Masterpiece, made anew in Christ so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago. (Eph 2:10) We were chosen by God and He calls us by name. We belong to Him. (Isa 43:1) In all things, God will work for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. (Rom 8:28) We did not choose God, but He chose us and appointed us so we might go and bear fruit that will last. And whatever we ask for in Jesus’ Name will be given us. (John 15:16)

Ephesians 1:13-14

And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in Him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, Who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.

  • More Truth to soak in: Since we are united with the Lord, we are one with Him in spirit. (1 Cor 6:17) We have received power when the Holy Spirit came upon us, and we are God’s witnesses to the ends of the earth. (Acts 1:8) The Spirit opens our minds so we can understand the Scriptures. (Luke 24:45)

In summary, this is who we are and what we possess in Christ …

  • We are blessed with every spiritual blessing in Christ. Eph 1:3
  • We are chosen by our Heavenly Father. Eph 1:4-5
  • We are accepted by God and a recipient of His grace. Eph 1:6
  • We are completely redeemed and forgiven in Christ. Eph 1:7
  • We have a wonderful inheritance in Christ. Eph 1:11
  • We are sealed by the Holy Spirit who guarantees our inheritance! Eph 1:13-14
  • We have the Spirit of wisdom and revelation so we can know Christ better. Eph 1:15-18
  • The same power that raised Christ from the dead and seated Him at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms lives in us. Eph 1:19-21

God Himself establishes and anchors our identity in Christ and the enemy will NEVER be able to take any of this away from us! Please take time to own His promises deep within your heart. Knowing our identity in Christ will strengthen us and help us to live a victorious life here on earth.

Blessings,

For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. (Col 3:3)
