“For if you keep silent at this time, relief and deliverance will rise for the Jews from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. And who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” (Esther 4:14 ESV)
Purim is a joyful holiday celebrating the Jewish people’s deliverance from a plot to annihilate them, as recorded in the Book of Esther. Purim is celebrated by reading the Megillah, distributing charity, giving gifts and joyful feasting.
The Story Behind Purim
The Book of Esther took place during the reign of the Persian king, Xerxes, who disposed of his first queen (Vashti) after she refused to come before him when summoned.
Hadassah, a Jewish orphan raised by her cousin Mordecai, was taken into the Persian palace (along with many other young virgins), and she was eventually crowned queen Esther, though she kept her Jewish identity hidden.
Meanwhile, an arrogant official named Haman became enraged when Esther’s cousin, Mordecai, refused to bow down to him. In retaliation, Haman devised a genocidal plot and crafted a decree to annihilate all the Jewish people in the empire. Lots were cast (Purim refers to ‘pur’, meaning lot) and a date for destruction was set.
It looked final.
It looked like a sealed deal.
It looked like evil was winning.
But Heaven was orchestrating what earth could not see.
The night before Haman planned to ‘honor’ himself, the king couldn’t sleep so he ordered the book of the chronicles, the record of his reign, to be brought in and read to him. It was then that a forgotten record was read and Mordicai’s loyalty was remembered. Coincidence? No. Providence.
At Mordecai’s urging, Esther risks her life by approaching the king without being summoned, an act punishable by death. These famous words recorded in The Book of Esther 4:14 captures the turning point:
“And who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”
Through courage, wisdom, fasting, and divine providence, the plot was exposed. The gallows Haman built for Mordecai became the place of his own downfall. Fear turned into feasting and the day marked for slaughter became a day of celebration. Haman’s plan was completely reversed and the Jewish people were saved. What was intended for destruction became a day of victory and joy.
God is still moving in the earth today
Divine reversal is happening right now in Iran (Ancient Persia)
The beautiful people of Iran have been brutally oppressed by an evil Islamic regime for 47 years. The regime’s leader was demonically obsessed with destroying Israel and was willing to abuse and mis-manage his people and resources to do so.
How obsessesed was he? In June 2017, he unveiled a large digital clock in Palestine Square, Tehran, and programmed it to count down from 8,411 days, declaring that nothing would be left of the Jewish state by the year 2040. A date for destruction was set! Ali Khamenei, a modern day Haman, never accepted this truth: to be an enemy of God’s people is to position yourself to be an enemy of Almighty God Himself.
Yesterday, a few days shy of Purim (March 2-3, 2026), this evil man was killed in a military air strike and he won’t be carrying out his evil plot anymore.
God is using our 47th President to help Israel dismantle 47 years of evil occupation in this biblical land. And oh, His perfect timing! Not just with Purim but this year, we Americans will be celebrating 250 years of our own freedom from tyranny and oppression.
Divine Reversal – what was meant for harm is turning into victory.
Why Purim Matters to Christians today
What if the story of Purim is actually your story too?
The Jews were living in exile. They were scattered, culturally pressured, politically vulnerable. Does this sound familiar? As Christians, we often feel like strangers in a culture that doesn’t share our values. We may not be facing a royal decree, but we sure feel the tension, the pressure and the incredible hostility.
But, the covenant-keeping God who preserved Israel in Persia is the same God who sent Christ for our ultimate deliverance.
Purim is a story of reversal. It shows us what it looks like when God works behind the scenes, when His voice seems quiet but His hand remains steady. A decree of death became a decree of divine defense. The mourning turned into joyful feasting. The gallows built for Mordecai became the instrument of Haman’s downfall.
God reversed what appeared to be irreversible.
Now, doesn’t that sound like the Gospel?
The cross, Rome’s tool of humiliation: became Heaven’s instrument of redemption.
The grave, a place of finality: Sealed and guarded, it became the doorway to resurrection.
My friend, please let this sink in: Even when God’s presence isn’t obvious in your situation, even when culture seems loud and threatening, even when your prayers feel like they’re hitting a ceiling, God is still working on your behalf.
Purim reminds us …
- God is working in the hidden chapters of your life.
- Silence does not mean abandonment or absence.
- Political tension does not intimidate a sovereign God.
- And what the enemy schemes, God can overturn.
We may feel overlooked. Esther was an orphan in exile.
We may feel outnumbered. The Jews were scattered in a foreign empire.
But, please remember this:
Even when God seems silent in your story, He is not absent.
Even when culture feels hostile, He is still sovereign on His throne.
Even when you feel surrounded, God + you are the majority in any crowd.
Purim reminds us:
God knows exactly where His people are.
God positions His people strategically.
God overturns what the enemy intends for harm.
Purim declares: God positions His people intentionally. Esther didn’t land in the palace by accident. Mordecai’s loyalty wasn’t forgotten, it was recorded and revealed at exactly the right moment.
Not one detail was wasted and neither are yours!
Even when God seems invisible in your circumstances, His hand is steady.
Even when you don’t see miracles, He is moving mightily on your behalf.
Even when the “lot” seems cast against you, heaven gets the final word!
You may be in a season where nothing looks miraculous. No open doors. No dramatic breakthroughs. No visible evidence that God is intervening. But the book of Esther whispers something powerful: Just because you don’t see Him moving in your circumstances doesn’t mean He isn’t actively writing your story.
Purim is not just a Jewish holiday — it’s a testimony that God preserves all His promises, protects His purposes and positions His people for impact. You’re not random. You’re not forgotten. You’re not too late!
For such a time as this, you’re right where God can use you.
God is moving chess pieces you cannot yet see …
Esther didn’t know why she was placed in the palace at first.
Mordecai didn’t know why his good deed went unrewarded for years.
The Jews didn’t know how deliverance would come.
But God sure did.
And He timed everything perfectly.
Purim teaches us that delay is not denial. Hiddenness is not abandonment. Silence is not absence. You are not random. You are not misplaced. You are not overlooked.
Sweet Sister, you have been positioned for such a time as this. In your family. In your workplace. In your community. In this cultural moment.
Purim is proof that when evil schemes, God already has a counterplan. The decree of death did not get the final word and neither will the things threatening your peace today.
So celebrate this truth: The same God who preserved His covenant people in Persia is the same God who holds you securely in Christ. Their story didn’t end with destruction, it ended with deliverance. And yours will too!
Live Loved in Christ,
