“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago.” Ephesians 2:10 NLT

We are God’s Masterpiece – Ephesians 2:10 …

Hello Friend!🌻

Did you know that you are God’s masterpiece?

All human beings were lovingly and very tenderly created in His very image, but when you accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you went on to become God’s working masterpiece.

I know! That’s alot to take in, right?

Whenever I hear the word masterpiece, it immediately brings to mind the beautiful artwork of two of my favorite old masters of the Renaissance Period: Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo.

In art history, the term old master refers to an artist who was fully trained in the guild system and had moved on to work independently, many of them taking on pupils of their own.

These masters were known for their innovative techniques in creating believable human figures and landscapes. They were so revered that being able to copy or replicate their work eventually became the baseline for new art students, who were expected to become proficient in this skill before being allowed to move on to paint from their own interpretation of life.

Hmmm … imagine if, in this moment, we were sitting before THE Master as He paints our portrait. Would our Creator’s own interpretation of us, His Created, clash with the way we see ourselves?

With every brushstroke, would we wrestle with Him because we don’t feel like a masterpiece?

Or would we be able to find rest in His love and give Him permission to show us the sweet truth of who we really are in Him?

This Master of all masters, who really doesn’t need to seek approval from us or the Guild to work independently in His interpretation of His own creation.

The King James translation of Masterpiece is Workmanship, which in the original Greek is ποίημα (poiēma), pronounced poy’-ay-mah. Strong’s Concordance doesn’t mention this but the words poem or poetry sure do come to mind here, doesn’t it?

Poiema is found in only one other place in the Bible: For the invisible things of Him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse (Romans 1:20 KJV).

And according to Merriam Webster, the definition of masterpiece is: something (as a work of art) that is a great achievement and often its creator’s greatest achievement.

My hubby and I have enjoyed many beach sunsets where God’s incredible brush strokes across the sky took our breath away. Then in Fall of 2020, I got to experience the majestic peaks of Glacier National Park with Susan, my blogging buddy. BUT, despite the impressiveness of these works of creation, neither will ever take the special place that we hold in our Creator’s heart.

God considers us His greatest achievement … His masterpiece! His sunsets may take our breath away but we take His breath away. Let’s not let this stunning truth escape us today …

  • When we grieve: “But Lord, I’m a mess” … He lovingly promises us: “when you look to Me for help, you will be radiant with joy; no shadow of shame will darken your face” (Ps 34:5).
  • When we despair: “But Lord, I don’t feel beautiful” … He lovingly comforts us: “You are altogether lovely, my darling, there is no flaw in you” (Song of Songs 4:7-9).
  • When we regret: “But Lord, I’ve made too many mistakes” … He lovingly reminds us: “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness” (2 Cor 12:9).
  • When we cry out: “But Lord, I myself was a big mistake” … He lovingly lifts our chin so we can look into His eyes as He whispers: “… you were fearfully and wonderfully made” (Ps 139:14).

God never required for us to do good things in order to be loved or saved by Him …

Our part is just to yield and surrender our hearts to Him. Relationship first, then the good fruit will flow out of abiding in Him.

In fact, our focus verse tells us:

” … He created us anew in Christ Jesus, SO we can do the good things He planned for us long ago.” (Eph 2:10 NLT, emphasis added).

An old master knew how to apply the rich, buttery oil paints to his canvas in intentional and strategic layers to keep the painting from cracking so it could withstand the test of time.

Well, our Master has eternity set in His heart as He lovingly paints His Masterpiece of us. And every one of His brushstrokes will reveal more of Christ in us for His glory …

Has God revealed to you what may be getting in your way in believing that you are His masterpiece? Did someone tell you that you were anything less than who God created you to be? If he calls us His masterpiece, shouldn’t we see ourselves in the same healthy manner?

One more thought before we close …

You are not a completed masterpiece like those created by the human masters of old. You are an ongoing, living, moving, breathing, beautiful but unfinished work in progress in the loving hands of our Master Creator. His final brushstroke won’t be laid down on the canvas of your story until you draw your last breath on this earth and pass through the veil into His inner sanctuary.

This is His grace. This is His redemption. This is how much He loves you, my friend. Hugs and prayers …
