Jesus is more than enough

AND THIS SAME GOD WHO TAKES CARE OF ME WILL SUPPLY ALL YOUR NEEDS FROM
HIS GLORIOUS RICHES, WHICH HAVE BEEN GIVEN TO US IN CHRIST JESUS.
Philippians 4:19 NLT ❤ (Verse on Bible Hub)

JESUS IS MORE THAN ENOUGH

Jesus gives us this invitation in Matthew 11:28: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Verse on Bible Hub)

My sweet friend, when you approach Jesus in prayer, do you bring your completely empty cup to Him and ask Him to fill it to overflowing? Or do you deny your cup is even empty?

Have we honed such great survival skills in our lifetime that we can keep up the facade that everything is fine, even when we are completely dying on the inside?

Jesus is more than enough

Perhaps when a loved one is sick or hurting, we feel guilty asking God to help us with something personal?

Or maybe we acknowledge our cup is empty, but we try to fill it first in our own strength. Not only to mask the emptiness inside of ourselves to those around us, but because we feel unworthy if we come before God empty handed.

Then there are some of us who are comfortable bringing our empty cups before the Lord. But we don’t linger in His presence long enough for Him to fill it to overflowing. A run by, drive through, kind of filling will leave us with lean, half empty souls and make it hard to get through the day.

Whatever our personal situation, we women tend to be natural nurturers by heart. If we come across someone who needs a hand, we lend it. A friend needs us? We are there. If our child hurts, we wish with all our hearts that we could take the hurt away.

But try as we might, we can’t pour from an empty cup. And God cannot fill a cup that we want to first fill ourselves.

When I was a newbie Christian many years ago, I felt guilty whenever I asked God to help me because I could always think of someone else who needed Him more. Or multiple ‘someone else’s’ at that. There were times I couldn’t even ask Jesus to bless me with His peace and rest because the world around me was crying out in brokenness.

Pretty much, I felt selfish if I asked Jesus to fill my empty cup until it overflowed. I believed it would cause someone else to go without.

And just as one stinky thought can lead to another, one misguided perception of mine digressed into a whole other level of crazy. I can still remember one evening in particular as I was kneeling beside my bed, my heart heavy for a friend. I remember telling Jesus, “Lord, I will be ok until You return. Please go and help her. I will be right here when you get back! “

Y’all, for real. I told Him that. More than once.

I thought I was being unselfish. I was simply putting my needs aside and raising my friend up to the throne room. Right? Well, not exactly.

In some misguided posture of humbleness, I unintentionally made myself bigger than God. I spent so many years thinking if I didn’t take care of myself, who would? So, not realizing what I was doing, I thought I needed to direct Jesus in how to take care of me. God can’t be dethroned, but I dethroned Him in my heart if that makes sense. I am so thankful for His patience and grace.

Jesus is more than enough

After I became a born again Believer, it took a little while of walking with Jesus before my eyes began to open to Who He really was. Each time I was willing to bend my knee to Him, yield my will to His, trade my understanding for the Holy Spirit’s guidance … those were the moments where He could flood me with more of Himself.

He is almighty God but He’s NOT distant and judging my every move from far away. In fact, He doesn’t keep track of every time I mess up. Rather, He’s delighted each time I choose to walk in faith and believe Him.

As my Creator and loving Father Who is closer to me than my next breath, He knows my deepest thoughts before I even think them. He doesn’t think I’m a pain everytime I need help, which is all of the time! In fact, in my surrendered weakness He is made strong! (2 Corinthians 12:9)

God loves when He sees me willing to let go of old ways of thinking and come before Him with a teachable spirit.

Interested in every single detail of my life, He is faithful, approachable, trustworthy, and kinder to me than I am to myself! My protector, my counselor, my teacher, my Lord. He wants me to succeed and He wants me to let Him help me. He is my strength, peace and joy!

The closer I think I am getting to Him, the bigger He seems to grow, and thus the more I become aware that He is MORE than enough … more than capable! Its not that Jesus isn’t already huge and has some growing to do. It was me. The more I see Him as He really is, the more my fears and anxieties begin to melt away.

We can’t receive deep revelation second hand. We can listen to many sermons and faithfully read our devotions every single day. And yes, they are super important and God can bring a timely message through them. But we shouldn’t be satisfied to stop there because then we are only nibbling on someone else’s leftovers when the King of the Universe has invited us to feed at His banquet until we are filled to overflowing.

It takes digging into His Word and meeting with Him for yourself to hear (and know) His voice, feel His heart, and see Him as He really is. It takes personal encounters with Him for it all to become very real in our hearts and not just pass through us as head knowledge.

Jesus wants to ask us the exact same question today that He asked His disciples.

He is asking, “Who do YOU say I AM?” (Matthew 16:13-17 NIV)

The disciples were aware how other people around them viewed the Son of God. And you are pretty conscious how your friends, coworkers, and your family feel about Him. But what is most important is how YOU see Him.

Jesus is more than enough

Our answer to Jesus’ question will reveal volumes from the deep places in our hearts. Because if we don’t see Jesus as He really is, we will continue to struggle in self survival mode. When we make ourselves larger than God, it will be hard to trust Him.

When we put ourselves on the throne, who will help us when trouble comes?

Why would we ask Jesus for help when we don’t think He is strong enough? Why would we linger to drink deeply from His cup when we feel we can’t spare the time because we have so many plates to keep spinning in our own strength?

This God Who hung all the stars in the sky and sustains all of Heaven and Earth … we believe He will raise us up on that last day, don’t we?

Then can we trust Him to completely fill our cups today without it taking from anyone else? You are not being selfish, or taking from anyone else, when you ask for help many times a day! God is so big that each of us can be His favorite. Each of His children are the ‘apples of His eye.’

May we strive to yield, moment by moment, our need to be in self survival mode and let the Holy Spirit open our heart and mind to a whole new revelation of Christ Himself. Blessed are you, sweet sister, because this will not be revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by our Father in Heaven.

When we come face to face with the living God, it is virtually impossible to remain the same. Click To Tweet

Pause and drink deeply from His cup, dear Sister.

Jesus will be more than enough for you today. ❤

Blessings,

The LORD will guide you continually, giving you water when you are dry and restoring
your strength. You will be like a well-watered garden, like an ever-flowing spring.

  1. WOW this fourth paragraph!! I am sharing this article on Grandma Mary Martha and coming back when I have more time. Love ya, sister! You are a blessing!

    1. Thank you so much Tammy! I pray that the Lord will use this to minister to someone who is hurting today. ❤

  2. Donna, this is almost freaky – if it weren’t for knowing the Holy Spirit works this way. I have been meditating on your key verse over the past few days and up it pops again with this inspirational post. THANK YOU.

    1. Awee … love when the Holy Spirit confirms things to us! Thank you for sharing that with me, Sheri! ((hugs)) 😘💕

  3. A lot of thoughts here. Thanks for sharing your soul. The second hand analogy resonated with me.

    1. Thank you so much! I hope that you were encouraged and blessed during your time with us here. ❤

  4. I love this! You are so right, it is impossible to pour out from an empty cup but I (and am willing to guess many others) often don’t even recognize when our cup is empty because we are so used to trying to fill it through our own efforts. Resting in Jesus shouldn’t be an “as needed” activity but should be an everyday always one. Thanks for the gentle reminder!

    1. Thank you so much for your encouragement! Spending time in His Word and His presence is the only thing that will fill us and get us through this life. Blessings … 😘❤

  5. Oh goodness. You are not selfish for asking God to fill your cup. He is there to lift you up. That’s why we need a quiet time daily.

    1. Thanks Julie, yes I know. I mentioned in my post that this was how I felt when I was a new Christian many years ago. The Lord is having me share from past struggles (and not just current victories). Hopefully this helps someone who is stuck to know there is hope today. ❤

  6. Wow! This is so beautiful, Donna! I just had to sit quietly before the Lord after I got done reading it and let it have it’s way in my heart, mind and soul. I loved everything about it and the truth that when we come face to face with the living God, it’s virtually impossible to remain the same. I love Him so much and so thankful He doesn’t leave me the same and that He wants to reveal Himself to me. 💗 Thank you so much!!

    1. Susan, God really blessed me with your friendship. I always feel your love, support and encouragement in our writing journey together and it means so much to me! I pray that Jesus returns to you ten fold all that you have blessed me with! Thank you so much my friend … ❤

  7. Thank you for the reminder today! I tend to have faith God will do things for others, but I’m hesitant to believe He will do it for me. But the Bible tells us He wants good for us!! I need to remember who He is. ❤️

    1. You are so welcome! Blessings to you sweet sister! Praying for us both to believe God can do incredibly more than we can even imagine or know to ask! ❤

  8. This spoke to me on so many levels! I often feel bad about praying for myself and always pray for others’ needs instead. I’m now starting to learn that I cannot pour from an empty cup; I need to come before God and let him fill me before I can have any impact on the lives of others! Thank you so much for this post!

    1. Yes! Thank you for sharing that you were right where I was! Praying for us to be able to boldly go to Him, ALOT! To be lavishly, extravagantly and unapologetically filled up as very loved Daughters of the most high King! 😘❤

  9. Donna, this is a great reminder. We forget that God can be everywhere at once. Too often we try to bound God within the confines of our humanity.

    1. Yes we sure do! I want Him to keep opening my eyes to more of Him and His goodness! Thank you Ami for your encouragement! ❤

  10. Oh, Donna, this is so beautiful! Thank you for sharing your heart so openly here, and for pointing us to the Truth about Who Jesus is!

    1. Thank you so much, Jana! You are so encouraging! ❤

  11. Donna, this is beautiful, and I love your honesty. Knowing how to let Him fill our cup is crucial in life. Thank you for sharing this.

    1. You are so welcome and thank you, too, for your encouragement! Blessings Christina!! ❤

  12. So many beautiful reflections in this. It’s so true that we rush through our time with God. I know I do it sometimes. But when I take the time to really sit with God and the word, my cup does overflow!

    1. Mine too, Lacy!! Thank you so much! You are a blessing! ❤

The title alone grabbed my attention! Jesus is more than enough for me. More than the fears, more than the worry, more than the what-if’s, and most definitely more than the things we cannot control. Thank you for taking the time to be so candid and heartfelt in your words to describe just how Jesus is more than enough.

    1. Thank you so much for your encouragement LaDonna. I really loved your post about the importance of being persistent in our prayers as mothers. Such a sweet and beautiful post! Blessings to you today! 😘❤

  14. Wow, it really resonated with me that I might even deny that my cup is empty (I’m doing Okay!) and that I need to linger long enough for Him to fill me up. That has been my slow goal lately, to spend more time in the prayer closet and less time worrying about cleaning/duties. Great article!

    1. Thank you Jennifer! Praying for God to fill us both to overflowing!! ❤

  15. This. This is SO good! Who is Jesus to ME? Such an important question. The only way to fill up our cup is to know Him! I love how you said He can fill up our own cups and it takes nothing away from anyone else. Isn’t our God amazing?! He can fill every cup and let them run over and never runs out-for any of us! Beautiful post. Thank you for this encouraging reminder!

    1. Thank you so SO much for your sweet encouragement! ❤ God is so good to us!! He is SO amazing!! Hugs and blessings Elizabeth!

  16. This was a wonderful post. What you said makes a lot of sense. Some people don’t let God fill up their cup enough or try to fill it up themselves. That used to be me. I think I’ve gotten better at it though.

    1. Kathleen, thank you sweet sister! This used to be me for sure. Sending prayers and hugs your way for both of us to keep leaning on Jesus each day! ❤

  17. Such fantastic reminders of the love, faithfulness, and power of God!

    1. Thank you so much for your encouragement Kristen! Blessings to you! 😘❤

  18. Loved this! I love the image of coming to Jesus with an empty cup but not waiting long enough for Him to fill it. Intimacy with God and time devoted to Him is SOOO necessary. Thank you for this timely reminder, God bless you.

    1. Andrew, thank you for your encouragement! God bless you also! 😊

  19. So important and yet sometimes so hard to admit that our cups are empty. I love this description of approaching God in prayer.

    1. Thank you Elaine. Sometimes I get caught up in doing things in my own strength and don’t even realize it until a friend (or my hubby) calls me out on it or I just completely exhaust myself! Thankful to Jesus for the godly influences He places in our lives! ❤

  20. Matthew 11:28: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” This is one of my favorite verses in the Bible. I struggle with anxiety, and this is one of my go-to verses when I am having a difficult day. Thank you for the reminder that sometimes we just need to let go of the reigns, and let God take control of our lives. He is always more than enough!!!

    1. Oh Misty, I so love this! I struggle with anxiety also to the point where I sometimes forget to breathe. God is so good and He is more than enough to carry us through!! We just have to let Him. Sending hugs and prayers your way! Be blessed today … ❤

  21. I do this all the time too! Thanks for sharing these words of wisdom! Your experience has really helped shed light into my own life.

    1. Lily, thank you for taking time to read and encourage me this morning! Blessings to you … 😘❤

      1. You’re welcome. It’s a pleasure to read encouraging the thoughtful words of another woman of God 😊

        1. I definitely enjoyed your Blog this morning!! Praying for God to spread its reach farther than you can hope to imagine! ❤

            1. You’re welcome!

  22. I don’t even know where to begin to comment…your post was so full of wonderful nuggets!! I am one of those who sometimes tries to fill the cup myself, not because I think I can do it all on my own but because I sometimes feel that guilt about going to God all the time. We learn in life not to impose on others too much that it is sometimes hard to make that shift to having a Father who WANTS us to impose on Him for everything! Great post as always!

    1. Yes! That’s how I felt for a long time! Making that shift from taking dashed expectations off of people (who are limited and never meant to be my Jesus) to putting them on a more than able God has been one of the most freeing aspects in my walk with Him. Thank you for taking time to read and encourage me this morning! ❤

  23. Yes! Such truth! I loved reading thi!

    1. Thank you so much, Elizabeth! You have one of the most beautiful Christian Blogs I have seen! Blessings to you … ❤

  24. There are so many good things to chew on in this post. To fully grasp that nothing is too much for our God is to remove the limits we place on Him. He is more than able! Great post!

Rest and slowing down are things that God has been dealing with me over for the last couple years. Its so much my tendency to run myself dry. Thank you for this!

    1. Thank you Danell! Your post about memorizing Scripture was so sweet and encouraging this morning! Just what I needed today! Bless you sweet sister! ❤

  26. God is all powerful, and everywhere, and more than capable to take care of you and a friend at the same time. Don’t forget to fill your cup!

  29. I just talked about this very thing in a devotional yesterday. This is so true. We have to have Jesus fill us up before we can give. I am passionate about moms knowing what they believe so they can pass it on to their kids.
