Half the Battle – Healing Your Inner Hurts | Book Review and Giveaway

“The Holy Spirit comes to us in a loving, kind way … if you ever feel as if God is beating you over the head with a hammer, that is not the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit isn’t a bully, and He doesn’t function that way. No, He is gentle, kind, and incredibly patient.

You have a loving heavenly Father who is willing to walk with you every step on this journey. He can be trusted with the blade. Your job is to climb up on the table, expose the tender, broken, and rotten places in your heart, and allow Him to do surgery. This is the most important battle you will ever fight.

by Dr. Jon Chasteen

“Half the Battle” has become one of my new favorite books this summer!

Additionally, I believe it would make an awesome study to do together in a group setting because we have ALL experienced pain in our lives. God invited people in the Bible to begin the healing process with Him and He wants to do the same with us! This book is extremely well written and easy to read, but don’t get me wrong … it is jam packed with SO much Biblical Truth, is to the point and filled with lots of practical help.

With the help of the Holy Spirit, Dr. Chasteen wrote this book in such a way that I (and other readers) felt like he had read our mail. It was as if he could anticipate the reader’s questions and would answer them a few chapters later. You may also be like me and discover a battle or two you didn’t even know you were fighting. I feel the author’s heart and pure motive behind writing this book was and is to see us experience inner healing in Christ and be completely set free in the deepest recesses of our hearts.

I love the following excerpt from the book:

“The trumpet sounded, the people shouted, and the wall collapsed. The Israelites charged in and took the city. They got past what had been holding them back. This is what I am believing for you in whatever you’re facing too.

If we were to fast forward your story to the end, I believe your walls will fall. I believe your marriage will be healed, your addiction will be loosed, your calling and career will become clear, and you will be healed in Jesus’ name. But in order to get to that point, there are some things we can’t pass over. I just jumped from Joshua chapter 3 to chapter 6, but some very important events happened in chapters 4 and 5. Events that made chapter 6 possible. Maybe your walls haven’t fallen yet because you’ve tried to skip ahead to the end.

Could God be waiting for you a few chapters back?

I totally get it, by the way. Chapter 6 gets all the attention. It is the one that’s been preached from platforms and placed on Sunday School felt boards for decades. It’s the story that is put on paintings, coffee mugs, and posters.

However, while Jericho’s defeat was a public spectacle of God’s awesome power, this victory came only after half the battle had already been fought.

The first part of the battle did not take place outwardly for all to see. Instead, it was done in secret. Let’s rewind the film and go back to see this hidden struggle.”

Quote from Page 15, “Half the Battle – Healing Your Inner Hurts”

We are all going to experience battles in our lives here on earth.

Either we’ve already been through a battle, are enduring one now or will be experiencing one in the future. But one thing we don’t always realize is that before we can be victorious on the outside (the part of our lives that others see), we have to be victorious in the battle for our hearts (which happens in private with God alone).

God is interested in completely healing and bringing wholeness to every hurt pocket in our hearts. And it begins with surrender and a circumcision of our hearts.

“Circumcision is the sign of the covenant between God and His people. Before the Israelites went into battle against Jericho, God wanted to remind them of His promise: You are children of God. You are a chosen people. This is a covenant relationship. You don’t go into battle by yourself. I go into battle with you.

“Take away the foreskins of your heart.” Circumcision is not only a literal, physical cutting but also a symbolic, spiritual removal. In Romans 2, the apostle Paul writes:

“A person is not a Jew who is one only outwardly, nor is
circumcision merely outward and physical. No, a person is a Jew
who is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the
heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code.” (Romans 2:28-29)

Quote from Page 17, “Half the Battle – Healing Your Inner Hurts”

The place of circumcision is in a very sensitive, hidden and private part of a man’s body.

And so it is with our hearts.

Half the battle is won when we allow Jesus to circumcise us in the very private and tender area of our hearts. This takes absolute trust in our loving God. Trust that He wants to heal and never hurt us. Until we accomplish this, we won’t really be ready to go out and conquer the mountains in our lives. Our hearts are half the battle …
