“A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity.” Prov 17:17 NIV
Dear Sister in Christ, 🌻
Have you ever felt lonely even when you weren’t alone? You’re surrounded by people and still feel completely unseen? There’s laughter filling up the room, incoming messages blowing up your phone and tons of fun photos of you and your ‘friends’ posted online. And yet, your soul whispers …
- “Who truly sees me? Who truly knows me? Who is truly for me, God?”
- “Who would fight for me in the spirit when I can’t fight for myself?”
My friend, your heart is seeking biblical friendship … not just someone to keep you company but a covenant friend. Not just someone to hang out and be silly with but someone who will keep you prayed up when life falls apart.
The truth is:
Not everyone who’s close to you is committed to you.
And not every friendship is biblical.
We live in a world of likes, follows and surface-level relationships. But biblical friendship isn’t about convenience, it’s about covenant. It’s not about being there just when it’s fun and easy, but showing up even when it’s hard.
The Bible doesn’t treat friendship as optional, it treats it as essential …
Look at Jonathan and David.
1 Sam 18:1 tells us “Jonathan became one in spirit with David, and he loved him as himself” (NIV).
Their friendship wasn’t just built on mutual interests, it was built on a mutual love for God and submission to His purpose for them. Jonathan knew David was chosen to be king, even though he was actually next in line. But, instead of coveting and competing, he covered David. When King Saul, his very own father, wanted to see David dead, Jonathan chose loyalty to God over his own comfort, convenience, and even his earthly father’s expectations. Jonathan was a covenant friend.
“Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself” 1 Sam 18:3 NIV.
As I was pondering the beauty of having God at the center of our friendships, He reminded me of Eccl 4:12 “a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.”
This verse is usually referenced for marriages so I didn’t think to apply it here today. But how true, a friendship that is strengthened by faith is more resilient to the bumps and bruises of life.
My heart is reflecting today: “Am I the ‘Jonathan’ kind of friend for the precious women God has brought across my path? Shine Your Light, Lord, please show me where I need to come up higher!”
This is what biblical friendship does:
- It covers you in prayer when the enemy is after your mind.
- It seeks God’s grace to strengthen you when you feel like giving up.
- It speaks God’s truth over you when shame tries to steal your identity.
- It reminds you of your anointing when you forget Whose you are.
“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another” Prov 27:17 (NIV).
My friend, we weren’t designed to walk this journey alone. In a social media driven culture that celebrates the ‘appearance’ of connection but lacks the sincerity, depth and commitment of true relationship, God is calling us to something deeper:
To have (and be) that friend who … fights for us in prayer, speaks God’s truth in love, celebrates and never competes with our calling, and speaks up when we begin to drift.
This reminds me of the friend who will hold both our arms up like Aaron and Hur did for Moses when we’re too tired to fight on our own (Exodus 17:12).
- This the Body of Christ in action.
- This is not about striving for perfection. It’s about mutual love and reverence for God, teachability, honesty, honor, humility and accountability.
- It’s being Spirit-led, deeply rooted and grounded in God’s truth and love. Together …
It’s the friend who doesn’t just send a prayer emoji but actually prays when you say, “I’m drowning.” It’s the one who shows up, checks in, speaks up, and stays close, even when we’re not exactly “fun” to be around.
Even Jesus, the King of Kings, didn’t do life in isolation while here on earth. Jesus chose friends and modeled true friendship for us. He broke bread with them. He walked with them. He wept with them. He taught them. He let them see His humanity. He even washed their feet.
When Jesus spoke on friendship, He raised the standard:
“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” Jn 15:13 NIV.
Jesus isn’t just talking about emotional support here.
He is talking about commitment.
“A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity” Prov 17:17 NIV.
So let’s ask ourselves today:
Am I truly supported or just surrounded?
Do I have godly friendships that strengthen me or just keep me company?
Perhaps even MORE important … am I becoming the kind of friend I’m praying for?
Let’s pray, shall we?
Father God, some of us have walked alone for SO long, we started believing it’s actually safer that way. Holy Spirit, please help us to recognize, honor and steward the ‘God appointed’ friendships You bring our way. Bring us friends who sharpen, strengthen, and walk alongside us in truth and love. But most of all, please help us to be that friend, loving others in Christ as we point them to Him always. Amen …
Rooting for you always,
