She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,”
for she said, “I have now seen the One Who sees me.”
Genesis 16:13 NIV ❤ (Verse on Bible Hub)

EL ROI: THE GOD WHO SEES ME

I never grow tired of the story of Hagar!

When her mistress Sarai treated her very harshly, Hagar ran away. This is when the angel of the LORD came and spoke to her.

The story is found in Genesis 16 NLT.

I love the following verses:

Verse 7: The angel of the Lord found Hagar beside a spring
of water in the wilderness, along the road to Shur.

Verse 8: The angel said to her, “Hagar, Sarai’s servant,
where have you come from, and where are you going?”
“I’m running away from my mistress, Sarai,” she replied.

Verse 9: The angel of the Lord said to her, “Return to
your mistress, and submit to her authority.”

Verse 10: Then he added, “I will give you more descendants than you can count.”

Verse 11: The angel also said, “You are now pregnant and will
give birth to a son. You are to name him Ishmael (which means
‘God hears’), for the LORD has heard your cry of distress.

Verse 13: Thereafter, Hagar used another name to refer to the
Lord, who had spoken to her. She said, “You are the God who sees
me.”She also said, “Have I truly seen the One who sees me?”

Verse 14: So that well was named Beer-lahai-roi (which means
“well of the Living One Who sees me”).

El Roi. I love this “Name of God” so much!

Each time I hear or read the name “El Roi”, ‘The God who sees me,’ I am filled with a feeling of contentment and complete reassurance; knowing God’s got my back, He cares, He loves me and watches over me.

Even when it doesn’t feel like it!

He is the God Who sees you

Reassurance means the action of removing someone’s doubts or fears. God is the only one who can remove doubts and fears.

It has taken quite a few years for God to get me to this place of reassurance. And it wasn’t for His lack of trying.

There are so many ways I’ve experienced His watchful care.

While raising my children, (three boys and one girl), there were so many times I literally sat down and cried. I would ask,

“God, why did you give me three boys, knowing their dad would die and I would be left to raise them alone? With no good male role models? Doing man stuff. Stuff I didn’t particularly want to do.”

Of course this question would come after a stressful time. Just for one instance, having to crawl under our mobile home to fix plumbing with all the creepy spiders underneath there.

I don’t mean any offense here, but I don’t do spiders! Two of my sons and I had to do this so many times.

Now as I look back, I KNOW God was with me the entire time.

He never left me. Not one single minute!

El Roi saw me then just as he sees me now. I do wish I’d have listened to Him more, so I could have had that reassurance in my heart back then; His comfort had been there all along!

He is the God Who sees you

It’s too easy to underestimate God and try to mold Him into what we think we need Him to be. Even when we know God can’t be molded, we still try sometimes anyways.

I’ve learned this is mostly from a lack of understanding of Who He really is; Sovereign; all knowing and all powerful. He is the living one who sees us and hears the cries of our hearts.

He sees our misery; a state of great distress or discomfort of mind or body. (distress, anxiety, anguish, heartbreak, despair, dejection, depression).

He sees the cause or source of our great distress or discomfort; (affliction, misfortune, hardship, deprivation, pain, sorrow, trial, woe).

I can’t say that when I went through those valleys (hard times), it was fun going through it.

But I do understand now that going through the hard times is inevitable. They teach us lessons about trusting in the Lord. They make us stronger as we lean into Him and continue to move forward.

I can now say, “I have seen the God who sees me.” 💗💗

Please, whatever you are going through, never EVER give up!

You are not forgotten. You are not alone.

God is active and providing the way for you even when it feels like He is being silent. We just can’t see what He is up to all the time.

We must try to trust and rest in Him.

He is El Roi, the GOD Who sees YOU, sweet friend.

He hears your cries and He DOES love YOU; more than you realize sometimes.

Continue to cry out to Him and let us know if you’d like prayer. We are here for one another. 💗

Oh ya, one of my sons grew up to be a plumber and has a very successful business of his very own now. Isn’t that awesome?!!

What are some ways you’ve experienced El Roi watching over you?

  1. I love that Hagar was told God had heard her cries, but then she took the name further to say she had SEEN the God who sees her. It indicates a mutual relationship and implies he sees all her days, not just the troublesome times! Very powerful.

  2. These are beautiful words of reassurance, Susan. Thank you for them. To me, the idea of God’s personal love is equally too overwhelming to comprehend and too overwhelming to ignore. His grace is like air that must be breathed.
