My Cup Overflows with Goodness

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over. Psalm 23:5 NKJV

My Cup Overflows with Goodness …

One morning as I lingered in bed, Psalm 23, a psalm penned by David, ran across my mind. The words My cup runs over (from the New King James Version) couldn’t find rest and kept repeating itself until it found clarity in my soul. As I continued to lay there, the vision became clear.

My Cup Overflows with GoodnessWhen dining at a restaurant, the waitress or waiter will continue coming by your table asking if you’d like more water, right?

In David’s time if you were dining at a banquet table, the servant would make sure your water cup was never empty, continuously pouring in new. The Hebrew term for my cup runs over suggests saturation.

Have you ever poured water into a cup partially full just to have it overflow because you poured it too fast, or you weren’t paying enough attention?

Did you notice if it was the new water or the old water that spilled over the side?

If you’re not sure, and you can at this very moment, grab a glass, take it to the sink, fill it half full, then stop. Now, take a pitcher and pour more water into the partially filled cup until it overflows. What did you discover?

That’s right!

The NEW pushed the OLD out!!

This is exactly what happens when Jesus pours into our cup. It’s not just a little splash. He pushes out all the old, unpleasing, ugly stuff; our old ways of thinking, our hurts, struggles, heartaches, loneliness, regrets, bitterness, guilt, shame, confusion. Anything and everything that causes us to feel stuck, alone and distant from God.

Simultaneously, at the same time, He saturates (unites with the greatest possible amount, soaks) us with uplifting, positive truth, so our hearts are bursting with gratefulness, overflowing with blessings, and filled with joy as we realize that we have more than we could ask for.

Next time you’re feeling weighed down by unhappy emotions, close your eyes and picture Jesus pouring newness into that space and forcing them to leave. If you’re someplace where you can speak out loud, do so.

Jesus didn’t come to confuse us, but to set us free, so it can be as simple as saying, “Jesus, I want my cup to run over with freshness. Refill my heart with joy.” Or “Jesus, I’m too exhausted. This is impossible for me to do. Help me.”

Repeat it as often as needed. I promise Jesus won’t grow tired of you; He’s patient and faithful. Numbers 23:19 tells us that God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind.

Are those not awesome characteristics of God? He can be trusted.

Ask the Lord to help you be aware throughout the day when he’s pouring goodness into your cup.

My Cup Overflows with GoodnessIt could run over with natures beauty as you witness a sunrise on your way to work or a sunset outside your own front door.

Or maybe it’s the song of birds as you sit on your back porch, someone who encouraged you through a text or phone call, you finally learned the importance of boundaries, you fulfilled something on your bucket list, feeling the sunshine on your face, the song that came on the radio at the perfect time, or perhaps an unexpected hug?

We are a chosen people, a royal Priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that we may declare the praises of him who called us out of darkness into his wonderful light. (1 Peter 2:9 NIV)

In what ways is your cup overflowing with the goodness of the Lord?

It’s not always easy, is it? As a matter of fact, it can often be a downright struggle. Maybe it feels like your cup is only half full. Don’t beat yourself up, okay? It happens.

Sometimes we have to hold firmly to that one thing, even if it’s just one, so we don’t lose hope in the midst of the despair. Can you see that one thing? If not, I want to encourage you to call on the Lord as you look deep into the crevice of your heart until you find it.

Heavenly Father, You know each one of us in a personal and intimate way. Mend our broken hearts. Help us to never lose sight of the importance of being in tune with you and how you continuously fill our cup to overflowing. We need You, Lord. Thank you for your love and faithfulness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
