Tune my heart to sing Thy Grace

TUNE MY HEART TO SING THY GRACE

What is your favorite Hymn? Mine is Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing.

I don’t hear it very often. But when I do, I love to sing along … whether in Church, on the radio in my car, where-ever. And each time without fail, I get this huge lump in my throat when I get to the part …

“Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it! Prone to leave the God I love … !”

No matter where I’m at in life at the time, the tears spill out all over again! I don’t want to wander and “leave the God I love!”

Tune my heart to sing thy grace

But I unfortunately still do!

God always has nothing but Grace for me in those moments. I feel His warm hug and He floods me with His peace. I do pretty good for awhile, thrilled to be in this love relationship with Jesus, and then wham … I’m right back to wandering again.

I am thankful for God’s mercy and that He remembers our weaknesses. He knows we are but dust. Weak and easily distracted! We truly are like little sheep. We may not be lost anymore, but we have a tendency to wander from His fold … alot!

Our Shepherd lavishly loves us and leads us. He shields us, provides for us and cares for us. He gives us everything we could ever possibly need! But still on most days, I will get so busy that hours will pass by before I remember that Jesus is still in the room with me … softly whispering my name, patiently waiting for me to engage in conversation with Him again. Quietly, He watches me as I try to figure something out on my own.

Several years ago, I heard about a book called “The Practice of the Presence of God.” It was written by Brother Lawrence, a 17th Century Monk. Brother Lawrence hoped to close those gaps during the day when he forgot about God. What an awesome thing to strive for. I want to do that! To practice remaining in the manifest presence of God … every single minute that is humanly possible!

I’m currently reading through the Book of Psalms during my morning quiet time.

I have not been able to move past Psalm 27 for several weeks. The following verses have been resonating with me. Not just because my word for 2018 is ‘Delight’.

But because David echos my heart’s longing. I want to be more in tune with God. I want the things of this world to lose their sparkle so much so that I forget I’m in the world. Not the other way around where I forget Jesus is in the room (world) with me. I want Jesus to change the desires of my heart to where …

“The one thing I ask of the Lord — the thing I seek most — is to live in the
house of the Lord all the days of my life, delighting in the Lord’s perfections
and meditating in His Temple. For He will conceal me there when troubles come;
He will hide me in His sanctuary. He will place me out of reach on a high rock.”
Psalm 27:4-5 NLT (Passage on Bible Gateway)

Tune my heart to sing Thy Grace

I pray that our heart’s desire will be to become so in tune with God, to be concealed and hidden in Him, and to delight in Him. So much so that we begin to KNOW Him better. To know His heart, His thoughts, His will. So we will be able to sing the song in His heart back to Him, to ourselves and to others in the right pitch. Not His song as we think it should be, but His song as it really is.

I am believing by faith that God can tune our hearts to hear His voice clearer if we want Him to. We will begin to resonate His song back to Him with the right notes.

For His grace to flow through us and on to others, we have to let His grace flow freely. Which means we must receive it first for ourselves. No beating ourselves up or deeming ourselves unworthy anymore. Which causes blockages. If we spend our days beating ourselves up, then God does not recognize the song we are singing to Him or to others because we have altered it.

His grace flows through us and then on to others. We have to let His grace flow freely, which means we must receive it first for ourselves. Click To Tweet

Even though we are in this world, we can surrender to God’s fine tuning of our receiver to hear Heaven’s melody just as it really sounds today. So much so that we can sing it back to Him and He will recognize it! We can’t dance with Papa God until we let Him lead.

Many blessings to you sweet sister …

“Oh, to grace how great a debtor
Daily I’m constrained to be
Let that goodness like a fetter
Bind my wandering heart to Thee
Prone to wander, Lord I feel it
Prone to leave the God I love
Here’s my heart, oh, take and seal it
Seal it for Thy courts above.”

  1. Donna, I couldn’t love this more. Not having grown up in the church, I didn’t begin my walk with much appreciation for the hymns. Fortunately, that is no longer the case because there is soooo much wisdom in those songs. This one in particular is also a favorite of mine (Chris Rice has a wonderful version, btw) and it’s because of that very “prone to wander” line! It is a common lament to Our Father during my prayers. But, you are right… He is so patient and always ready to receive us back and replant our feet on His path. Also, this part right here from your post is truly beautiful: “I pray that our heart’s desire will be to become so in tune with God, to be concealed and hidden in Him, to delight in Him, that not only will His thoughts become our thoughts. But we will be able to sing the song in His heart back to Him, to ourselves and to others in the right pitch. Not His song as we think it should be, but His song as it really is.” One of my fave verses is Zeph 3:17, so this will be a go-to pray for me, with your permission, I hope 😉 I look forward to reading more from you!

    1. Yes definitely, Kacy! I love that you would use it in your prayer time! I am with you in that I didn’t grow up in Church either. Zephaniah 3:17 is also one of my favorite Scripture Verses! I am just in awe of trying to take in how much He loves us! It is more than my soul, mind and emotions can handle, but I am still wanting to be overwhelmed even more! Bless you sweet sister!! ❤

  7. This is one of my favorite hymns as well ,Donna ! The irony behind the hymn writer’s life is that he did wander away from the Lord . It was a powerful reminder of how we must be more alert and choose and ONe THING like David .

    Blessings!

  13. Your post (as usual) struck a cord for me. I desire to think on the LORD every minute of every day and though I struggle, I rejoice that His constant affection is on me. I’ve strayed and wandered from the fold and have experienced first hand how dangerous it can be. After experiencing the goodness, GOD offers, I don’t want to go back SO thank you for the reminder!
