I can do all things through Christ | Philippians 4:13

Philippians 4:13 tells us we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us.

This verse is so versatile. If we could only have one verse to stand on, this would work, right? I mean look at the power in it! “All things” leaves nothing out. We can apply it to everything God has called us to do:

  • Love our neighbor as ourselves.
  • Pray unceasingly for others.
  • Forgive those who hurt us.
  • Step out into the unknown.
  • Trust God.

Here is a beautiful commentary on Phil 4:13 from Matthew Henry:

“We have need of strength from Christ, to enable us to perform not only those duties which are purely Christian, but even those which are the fruit of moral virtue. We need his strength to teach us to be content in every condition. The apostle had seemed to boast of himself, and of his own strength: I know how to be abased (v. 12); but here he transfers all the praise to Christ. “What do I talk of knowing how to be abased, and how to abound? It is only through Christ who strengthens me that I can do it, not in my own strength.”

So we are required to be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might (Eph. 6:10), and to be strong in the grace which is in Christ Jesus (2 Timothy 2:1); and we are strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man, (Ephesians 3:16). The word in the original is a participle of the present tense, en toµ endynamounti me Christoµ, and denotes a present and continued act; as if he had said, “Through Christ, who is strengthening me, and does continually strengthen me; it is by his constant and renewed strength I am enabled to act in every thing; I wholly depend upon him for all my spiritual power.”

Matthew Henry (Commentary on Phil 4 at blueletterbible.org)

Because Jesus lives in us and gives us the strength to endure, we can push through and be content through anything.

Even if I might be stuck in the very middle of a huge mess, I can …

  • Push through and be content in my marriage because Christ lives in me and strengthens me.
  • Endure and be content with people’s gossip because Christ lives in me and strengthens me.
  • Deal with my family’s issues because Christ lives in me and strengthens me.
  • Remain faithful to God through this sickness because Christ lives in me and gives me strength.

These are just a few scenarios we can apply this verse to.

I can do all things through Christ | Philippians 4:13

For me personally, Philippians 4:13 means I can remain faithful to God as He draws my wayward son toward Him.

There are times when it feels like nothing will ever change. The exhaustion is unbearable. It’s during these times, I must call on Jesus for his strength to get me through.

When we feel overtaken by anger, frustration, heartache, lack of knowing, exhaustion etc., we need to remember who lives in us, who has brought and is still bringing, many necessary changes into our heart; our Savior, Jesus.

He is the one who will help us learn, because it is a learning process, to be content in all things.

Even in the impossible, we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us.

I hope you were encouraged today. Whatever you are facing, my friend, please know Jesus is with you and will carry you all the way through to the other side!
