BIBLE VERSES ABOUT FREEDOM

How do you define freedom?

United States Flag

A few synonyms on Merriam Webster are: Independence, Self Determination, and Self Governance. These words remind us of our brave forefathers who gave their lives to fight for our independence from the king, don’t they?

However today, we are witnessing the heartbreaking chaos and confusion of an independent people who are determined to govern themselves, many times with no regard for God or the life and liberty of others.

We pray in our small groups at church for our leaders and for the people to turn their hearts back to God. But these past few years, the uprise of injustice and dishonor in our country is overwhelming. As our Country prepares to celebrate Independence Day, I am keeping hope alive by fighting back discouragement. I will continue to keep my prayers rising heavenward and my eyes fixed on God.

I could feel God leading me to write this post but my words kept failing me. After seeking His heart, the first thing the Lord brought across my path were some words from Abraham Lincoln on the back of a man’s t-shirt. Last weekend, my hubby and I were waiting behind another couple to be seated at a restaurant on Father’s Day. And on the back of this guys t-shirt, my eyes fell on these words:

United States Flag“My concern is not whether God is on my side … my greatest concern is to be on God’s side, for God is always right.”Abraham Lincoln

I googled this quote when we got home. During the Civil War, when Abe Lincoln was asked if God was on his side, his response revealed the posture of his heart and Who he sought to lead him in his decision making.

President Lincoln knew deep down the battle belonged to the Lord (Exodus 14:14) and God’s thoughts and His ways were higher than his. (Isaiah 55:8-9)

We can be so self absorbed, can’t we? I know I can be! We can feel entitled to our right to define freedom in any way we so desire as long as it benefits us in the moment. Even as Christians, if we’re not careful, we can become more concerned whether God is for us rather than asking the better question: Are we for Him?

THE TRUE MEANING OF FREEDOM

I believe God’s definition of freedom is simply this:

We are truly free when we are free to live for Him!

Jesus paid for us to have this liberty when He died on the cross by breaking the power (and penalty) of sin so we could come boldly into the very presence of His Heavenly Father.

God reminded me what He told Moses in Exodus 8:1:

“Go to Pharaoh and say to him, ‘This is what the LORD says: Let My people go, so that they may worship Me.'”

The ESV version uses the word ‘serve’ in place of ‘worship’.

Doesn’t this remind you how God lead another group of people to freedom so they could serve Him?

In the 17th century, our North American Colonies were settled by men and women who escaped religious persecution in Europe so they could freely live for God and worship Him here. Many founding fathers were very active in their churches.

The father of our country, George Washington, exemplified integrity and character in his leadership. I’ve always loved the painting of him kneeling in prayer during the hard winter at Valley Forge. One of his quotes, which encouraged my heart to never give up praying for our nation, was:

“Truth will ultimately prevail where pain is taken to bring it to light.”
– George Washington

I believe God led these people to cross the vast ocean to this land and established us as a great independent nation because our hearts and knees were humbly bowed in reverence to Him.

Why did God do this? So we could be free to serve and live for Him …

FREEDOM IN CHRIST – Bible Verses on Freedom

    1. Thank you Mary. I agree. True freedom can only be found in Jesus. ❤

  20. Hi, thank you for putting together this great list of scriptures in freedom! I, too, feel discouraged about this nation and find that the scripture that most helps to not give up is Isaiah 9:6b “And the government will be upon His shoulder,” for it reminds me that God is in control, and that I can take heart knowing that He has already overcome the world. Happy 4th of July! ❤️🤍💙🇺🇸

    1. That’s a great verse to remind us Who is really in control. Bless you sweet sister! Thank you for joining us here today … ❤

  21. The Abraham’s Lincoln’s quote reminded me of when Joshua was approaching Jericho and he was intercepted by the Commander of the Lorrd’s Army. Joshua asked him, are you for us or for our enemies. His response was “Neither. I am the Commander of the Lord’s Army.” In times like this we have to double down and remember to be on only one side, “God’s side,” and do what He would want us to do regardless of the consequences.

    1. Yes it sure does! I remember a Lysa TerKuerst teaching on that portion of Joshua! Love this and thank you Luisa! I appreciate you very much … ❤

  22. Beautifully said Donna. When our forefathers came to this country for religious freedom, I can only imagine what they would be thinking in light of what people are doing to our religious freedoms today. It completely saddens me. But God knows and he cares and he loves us and there is a greater purpose for everything that’s going on. We just continue to pray, “thy will be done.” Beautiful post!

    1. I have also wondered what they would think if they could see the state of our country and it is very sad. But GOD … to keep from getting discouraged, I have to keep my hope anchored securely in Him. Thank you so much Wendy … ❤❤❤

  23. I think true freedom comes first from the heart, it’s how we see ourselves and it takes faith in God to embrace God’s freedom.

    1. Thank you Betty. I appreciate you … ❤

  24. Abe Lincoln was one of my favorite Presidents. I use to visit his memorial when I lived in the DC area – he had so much faith in God.

    1. He is mine too. We finally got to see his memorial a few years ago. Thank you Melodie! ❤

  25. Brilliant Donna- awesome selection of verses to encourage us, especially at this time xx

    1. Thank you for your kind words Jenna. Blessings … ❤❤❤

  26. “We are truly free when we are free to live for Him!” Amen!!

    1. Yes! ❤ Thank you Susan!

  27. Amen! Our freedom is in Jesus Christ. I love this encouraging post about who we are as God’s children and light in this dark world. Thank you!
